Borders Group is the second largest and most profitable book, music and movie retailer in the world, with 34,000 employees and more than 1,200 stores in the US, UK and Asia Pacific. Named Bookseller Retail Chain of the Year in September 2005, Borders UK currently operates 35 Borders Superstores in city centres and retail parks from Bournemouth to Inverness and 33 high street and airport bookshops under the Books etc. and Borders Express brands, occupying over one million square feet. The company also operates two distribution centres. Borders UK has expanded steadily over the past seven years. New superstores have opened every year and the company now has around eight percent of the UK bookselling market and a growing share in the specialist music and DVD markets. The Challenge: - Standardise payroll across stores — over the passage of time, stores had created their own pay rules that were not consistent with the rest of the Group - Create a more accurate payroll system that relied more on a standard set of rules than on an individual's interpretation of them - Reduce the level of manual intervention in the payroll process, thereby freeing up staff time to manage the payroll process proactively.
