Overview

In the ideal world, an organisation's IT infrastructure should be modelled
on its business objectives, and exist to serve these objectives, the internal
human resources that deliver them, the wider partner network, and,
ultimately, the customer experience.

However, the reality is that IT infrastructure is rarely planned and
developed like a new, 21st century city built on virgin land. Instead, it
evolves over many years as dozens of separate communities that merge
slowly into a single, complex entity, with all of the 'transport' problems
and outdated services you might expect.

The result is an IT infrastructure that resembles London: a sprawling
mass of the old and the new. People moan about the crumbling, legacy
infrastructure that was state of the art in a previous century, but
ultimately they accept the status quo — even if it prevents them from
working, or getting efficiently from A to B.
