The oldest adage of business is “give customers what they want.” With web commerce, there are two main things customers want: your product or service, and assurance that their personal or financial information will be secure. Posting a third party security seal on your business web site is meant to handle the assurance aspect. But the image alone is worthless unless your business is actively using security controls to find and fix vulnerabilities in the web site system. To provide true security, a web site must have a systematic security program using a range of controls for vulnerability scanning and remediation of the web site itself, its network, its web applications, and to verify authenticity of the site.
