The nirvana of 100% virtualisation faces a number of serious hurdles, one of which is backup. As data volumes increase, backing up virtual machines (VMs) using traditional tools can lead to major bandwidth bottlenecks and lengthy backup windows. This can have serious consequences for disaster recovery and data protection.
Based on a survey of IT professionals, this paper illuminates the extent of these issues and suggests methods by which IT managers can overcome the barriers to quick and reliable VM backup, enabling further virtualisation of their infrastructure. Areas covered:
* Disk vs tape for virtual backups
* Improving backup and data protection
* Implications of multiple hypervisors for backup
