The information economy together with increasingly stringent regulations around data protection means that all types of organisation are having to pay more attention to the way they backup data. However, when it comes to backup it seems that old habits die hard, especially in smaller companies.
A Computing survey of IT managers in UK SMEs found a remarkable lack of attention being paid to a subject that is still regarded as out of sight, out of mind. Many firms fail to encrypt valuable data, are unconcerned about the provenance of third party providers, and disinterested in the jurisdictions under which data is held.
Inefficient practices such as recording to tape and manually storing offsite abound even when more efficient, secure and inexpensive alternatives, such as online backup, are widely available
