IT operations have moved from backstage to center stage in many enterprises. One reason for this is the importance of IT service delivery. Improved management processes based on the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL®) and advanced management technologies such as Business Service Management (BSM), along with the strategic use of configuration management databases (CMDMDBs) have driven management processes into completely new territory. This development has been an evolutionary process. The first step in the process was a shift away from a purely technological focus to a more service-oriented perspective in IT operations. This shift introduced more automation in operations, and it has now reached the point where IT’s Operations Management processes are driving the overall business management solutions’ supporting processes.
