In today's information economy, good business is all about reliable data. To all intents and purposes, the corporate data - including information about customers, products, employees, materials and suppliers - is the business. But how deeply does the UK trust its core data - or even care about its accuracy?
Not much, according to an October 2011 poll of UK IT decision makers by Computing, which found that over 40 percent of these senior IT strategists accept that their data is unreliable and may not meet their business needs.
In the majority of organisations data problems start at the input stage. To cite a more recent adage beloved of DBAs: "rubbish in, rubbish out".
