The Big Data problem is not just about the growth in volume of business data, but also about the increasing number of data sources and data formats. Data can reside in internal silos, be stored in the cloud, communicated from business partners, collected from social media, accessed from online aggregators, or downloaded from publically available sites.
This all contributes to the complex web of the modern IT infrastructure. Aberdeen's December 2011 research study of 63 organizations facing Big Data challenges (defined as having at least 25 terabytes of active business data), indicated that merely having data integration tools was just the first step in achieving top performance.
Leaders, however, distinguished themselves through their support of data integration: a foundation of solid data management policies, higher adoption of tools for data access and user interaction, and faster investment in new technology.
