Is it time to drop the tape?

Overview

The price of disk-based storage with data de-duplication is dropping all the time. Have we now reached the stage where the traditional cost advantages of tape are outweighed by its relatively poor performance?

This paper argues that, given the massive increase in the volume of data that must be processed and stored, investment in disk-based solutions to replace tape could be a wise one. It provides a list of the main reasons for moving away from tape, including:

• Slow backup performance
• Lengthy recovery time
• Spiralling operational and capital costs
• Risks from lost or stolen tapes
• Lack of storage efficiency
